America Today

Six big problems, why they threaten the future of America

03. America_Today_600” There are a great many reasons to love America. For one thing, Freedom of Speech remains largely intact in the USA (although the FDA has struck a serious blow to the principle with its ongoing censorship of free speech about nutritional supplements). We also have a diverse culture of people who are by and large friendly people. This was brought home to me recently when I was traveling through the Gulf Coast region, talking to people on the street about the BP oil spill. Virtually everyone was friendly, and I found I could walk right up to all sorts of people — from the country fisherman in Biloxi Mississippi to the street-drumming entertainers in New Orleans — and they were all happy to chat. “

” America offers a lot to be thankful for, but there are also some serious problems that are eroding the very things that make America great. Those problems are the subject of Mike’s CounterThink Cartoon called America Today which portrays six of the most serious problems threatening America’s future. “

Long-Term Effects of Exposure to DiEthylStilbestrol

Conditions that suggest possibly impaired immune function–that is, respiratory tract infections, asthma, arthritis, and lupus–were reported more frequently among the persons with DES exposure

1988 Study Abstract:

Long-term effects of exposure to diethylstilbestrol
The NCBI advances science and health by providing access to biomedical and genomic information

In 1985 nearly 1,700 persons who had exposure to diethylstilbestrol (DES)–520 mothers, 1,079 daughters, and 94 sons–responded to a mailed questionnaire about their general health status. Results were compared with responses to the 1985 National Health Interview Survey and other population-based studies. As with research findings in animals, conditions that suggest possibly impaired immune function–that is, respiratory tract infections, asthma, arthritis, and lupus–were reported more frequently among the persons with DES exposure. Conditions that may involve altered endocrine function were also more frequent among such persons. Given the biased sample, findings from this preliminary survey are seen as guidelines to areas meriting more rigorous research.

Big Pharma and the Trans-Pacific “Free Trade” Agreement

Targeting Drug Price Monopoly and Mega Profits

If the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) “free trade” agreement allows drug companies (BigPharma) to operate outside and above the laws of nation-states, global corporate interests would be free to undermine our health care system while consumers and governments would be free to do nothing about it

Big Pharma has a new tool to make turbo-charged profits and insulate itself from efforts to rein in skyrocketing health costs. Under the emerging Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) free trade agreement with the U.S. and 11 Pacific Rim nations, drug companies will be able to challenge any restraint on their ability to price-gouge, including laws that empower public programs like Medicare and Medicaid to use their purchasing power to obtain lower prices. In the lawless market envisioned by the trade deal, drug makers would charge whatever they want without any constraints. TPP negotiators are currently meeting in Salt Lake City for critical discussions about this agreement, which would be the largest economic trade treaty since the World Trade Organization was established in 1995.

Routine Screening Mammography: how Important is the Radiation-Risk Side of Benefit-Risk Equation?

Low doses of low-energy X-rays produce an increased risk per unit dose of about a factor of 2

Abstract:

Routine screening mammography: how important is the radiation-risk side of the benefit-risk equation?
There is evidence that low-energy X-rays as used in mammographic screening produce an increased biological risk per unit dose relative to higher-energy photons.

The potential radiation hazards associated with routine screening mammography, in terms of breast cancer induction, are discussed in the context of the potential benefits. The very low energy X-rays used in screening mammography (26-30 kVp) are expected to be more hazardous, per unit dose, than high-energy X- or gamma-rays, such as those to which A-bomb survivors (from which radiation risk estimates are derived) were exposed. Based on in vitro studies using oncogenic transformation and chromosome aberration end-points, as well as theoretical estimates, it seems likely that low doses of low-energy X-rays produce an increased risk per unit dose (compared with high energy photons) of about a factor of 2. Because of the low doses involved in screening mammography, the benefit-risk ratio for older women would still be expected to be large, though for younger women the increase in the estimated radiation risk suggests a somewhat later age than currently recommended–by about 5-10 years–at which to commence routine breast screening.
