Abstract

Nederlands tijdschrift voor geneeskunde, NCBI PubMed PMID: 17557761, 2007 May 26.

In 2007 the Dutch DES Fonds (DES Fund) starts payment to victims of exposure to diethylstilbestrol in a collective settlement.

This is unique in the world because the arrangement covers the entire range of DES-related disorders and individual persons do not have to start an expensive and emotionally taxing legal procedure with uncertain outcome, which would last several years. Individuals can now be compensated based on medical evidence of DES exposure and the presence of a DES-related disorder covered by the settlement.

In close collaboration with the DES Centre (an association of DES victims) a careful procedure was followed before this settlement was realised. The Dutch Expert Committee on DES-related Health Effects first reviewed the literature for evidence and established a list of disorders with a causal association with DES. For each DES-related disorder covered by the settlement, the appropriate compensation was determined by the attributive risk and the severity of the disease. The Dutch collective settlement is the result of close collaboration between all parties involved.

  1. Too bad no settlements have been started in the USA.
I don’t think I’ll ever find my medical records for proof of exposure to DES. At age 66 those records are long gone. The only thing I have is a body that was born with a ” Timing Defect ” that interrupted my fetal development. When I was born I had one fetal ovary and one underdeveloped testis. Then you could add the testicular ovarian cancer and gender issues. With these I may have a chance to prove I was exposed. Between a crappy puberty and seven months of chemotherapy plus surgeries my life hasn’t been great. That’s not even counting all the years of trying to recover from treatments. For get my the monetary costs, my insurance company payed out hundreds and hundreds of thousands of dollars for my bills. I can only guess what I have lost in terms of lost income. I wound up retiring ten years earlier than I planed.
How much proof does one need? Are there really any other major causes of Illnesses like I have beside EDC endocrine disrupter chemicals such as DES. I was born in the land of sky blue waters, northern Minnesota and not some sludge dump.

      1. In my spouses family all eight children were given DES during their gestation. Of the eight children two of the girls have T shaped uterus and one boy has teratoma in place of his testis. Similar to my condition accept mine was far more advices.
We know this with 100% certainly.
In the small community we live in DES appears to be handed out like candy starting in the later forties.
My youngest sister in law, whom we took care of, committed suicide. DES was one factor in the suicide, as she failed to completely develop sexually.
