Voyage en “agnotologie”, pays de la science et de l’ignorance (2/4)

Un peu d’ignorance en moins sur les causes des maladies fait surgir beaucoup de questions embarrassantes…

En santé publique, ce que l’on demande aux médecins c’est de soigner leurs patients, pas de rechercher les causes de ces maladies. Devant l’afflux toujours plus nombreux de patients atteints de maladies du sang, une équipe du Centre Hospitalier d’Avignon s’est quand même posée la question. Mais un peu d’ignorance en moins sur les causes fait surgir beaucoup de questions embarrassantes. De la même manière, quand un historien s’intéresse à la silicose, la maladie du mineur, il s’aperçoit que pour plein de « bonnes » raisons, syndicats, patronat, pouvoirs publics ont su « négocier » une ignorance médicale de circonstance. Une ignorance qui fait des milliers de morts, aujourd’hui encore…

Comment, à une époque où les productions scientifiques foisonnent, l’ignorance résiste-t-elle encore ?

Les industriels du tabac ont produit pendant 40 ans une contre-science qui visait à empêcher tout ce qui aurait pu entraver leur business. Une véritable fabrique de l’ignorance était à l’œuvre que des chercheurs ont mis à jour. Ces « agnotologues » (de agnotologie : la science de l’ignorance), venus de toutes les disciplines, ont démonté les rouages d’une production volontaire de l’ignorance, puis se sont intéressés à des constructions involontaires de l’ignorance comme dans le cas du distilbène. Deux cas emblématiques de mécanismes d’ignorance qui servent toujours de « boîte à outil » pour tous ceux que les connaissances scientifiques incommodent…

  • How drug manufacturers have denied for more than 20 years that benzodiazepines and antidepressant drugs cause dependance.
  • How the UK drug regulator (MHRA) also denied this in 2003 at the same time that the World Heath Organisation reported that 3 antidepressants were in the top 30 list of drugs that create dependance.

  • That stopping an antidepressant suddenly can be very dangerous.

  • That the chemical imbalance lie is still being propagated amongst psychiatrists even thought here is no scientific evidence whatsoever so support it.
  • How psychiatric drugs should be used for acute/emergency situations only.
  • That the medication centred approach of psychiatry does more harm than good.
  • How patients should avoid psychiatric drugs unless they are used for a very short time or that the patient really feels that they need them.
  • That when you look at the randomised controlled trials, there is a large risk of bias in these trials and that antidepressant efficacy has been overstated.
  • That the Cochrane Collaboration undertook the most rigorous meta analysis ever undertaken of 131 trials involving 27,422 patients taking SSRI’s, this analysis showed that antidepressants do not have any meaningful effects and their harms outweigh any benefits there might be.
