I was born in 1952 and my brother in 1954. My mother had taken DES through both of these pregnancies. My brother was born 7 weeks early and had many problems growing up. I have had numerous physical problems because of the DES. Hyperthyroidism, twins born at 6 weeks early, hysterectomy at 36 due to cancer of the cervix and uterus. I could go on and on. When the original news came out in the 70’s my mom heard it on the news and dug through her papers and found the prescribing info from her pregnancy with me. At the end of the pregnancy, the doctor had her taking 26 tablets of it a day!I had my first appointment with a GYN in 1970 and was sent to UCLA medical center in Los Angeles, to a Dr. Townsend who was running a study on DES exposure. I had many of the side effects even then. A hooded cervix, menstrual problems etc. After the entry into his study, I never heard anything else and there was never a follow-up. I knew to have PAP smears every 6 months and because of this, I caught the cancer early. Unfortunately, I think because they didn’t know enough back then, (or enough info was not out there) that I could have been followed more closely and maybe have been able to help doctors recognize many more side effects. One of my twins has had to have a hysterectomy at 34. My granddaughter is now starting to experience problems with her menstrual cycles etc.
