The Full Pink Moon

This April full Moon heralded the appearance of the moss pink, or wild ground phlox (one of the first spring flowers). It is also known as the Sprouting Grass Moon, the Seed Moon, the Egg Moon, and the Fish Moon since it is also the time of year when fish would swim upstream to spawn. Historically, Native Americans living in what is now the northern and eastern United States kept track of the seasons by giving a distinctive name to each full Moon. With some variations, the same Moon names were used throughout the Algonquian tribes from New England to Lake Superior.

The Full Worm Moon

In March, the temperature typically started to warm up. The ground begins to thaw and earthworms begin to appear ; it’s easy to see how native Americans got the name for this full moon. It’s this time of year when the crows begin to appear as well, which is why another popular name for the March full moon is the full Crow Moon. This is also known as the Sap Moon, as it marks the time when maple sap begins to flow and the annual tapping of maple trees begins. To the European settlers, this moon was also known as the the Lenten Moon and was considered to be the last full moon of winter.

The Full Snow Moon

February is traditionally the month with the most snow ; it’s easy to see how native Americans got the name for this full moon. February’s full moon is sometimes called full hunger moon because when the snow was high, it was very hard to hunt and find food.

The Full Wolf Moon

January’s full moon got its name from the fact that during January the wolf packs howled hungrily outside of native American villages in the cold and deep snows. The January full moon name was sometimes the Old Moon.

The Full Cold Moon

There are native American names for the full moons that you can find here, here or here.

December’s full moon got its name from the fact that during December the cold weather really began to hit the tribes hard. Additionally, the nights were long and dark which only seemed to intensify the chilling temperatures. This full Moon is also called the Long Nights Moon by some Native American tribes as the winter nights lengthen.

The Full Frosty Beaver’s Moon

There are native American names for the full moons that you can find here, here or here.

November month full moon was named Beaver’s Moon because this was the time to set beaver traps before the swamps froze, to ensure a supply of warm winter furs. November’s full moon is also known as the Frost Moon.

The Hunter’s Moon

There are native American names for the full moons that you can find here, here or here.

October month full moon was named Hunter’s Moon because after the fields have been reaped, the leaves begin to fall and the deer are fat and ready for eating. Hunters can ride easily over the fields’ stubble, and the fox and other animals are more easily spotted. October’s full moon is also known as the Travel Moon, the Dying Moon, the Moon of Falling Leaves and/or the Blood Moon or Sanguine Moon because of its bright color.

The Harvest Moon

There are native American names for the full moons that you can find here, here or here.

September month full moon was named Harvest Moon because many of the native American’s tribes’ staple foods were ready to be harvested around this time. It was sometimes named the Corn Moon because it marked when corn was supposed to be harvested.

This is the full moon nearest the autumnal equinox (about September 23) when the angle of the moon’s orbit relative to the Earth’s horizon is at its minimum, causing the full moon to rise above the horizon much faster than usual. Since the difference of the moon’s rising time on successive nights barely varies, the moon appears to rise at nearly the same hour for several nights in succession. Because the harvest moon, like any full moon, must rise near the hour of sunset, harvest workers in the Northern Hemisphere may be aided by bright moonlight after sunset on several successive evenings. A similar effect is observed in corresponding southern latitudes around March 21…

The Sturgeon Moon

There are native American names for the full moons that you can find here, here or here.
August month full moon is called Sturgeon Moon because some native American tribes knew that the sturgeon of the Great Lakes and Lake Champlain were most readily caught during this full Moon.
Other full moon names include the Red Moon, Green Corn Moon, Grain Moon, Wheat Cut Moon or Blueberry Moon.

The Buck Moon

There are native American names for the full moons that you can find here, here or here.
July Month full moon is called Blood Moon, or Thunder Moon because thunderstorms are so frequent during this month, or the Buck Moon.
Male deer, which shed their antlers every year, begin to regrow them in July, hence the Native American name for this month’s full moon.
